Come toast the launch of celebrated webcomic creator Emily McGovern’s debut graphic novel, Bloodlust and Bonnets, a Regency tale of vampires, debutantes, Lord Byron, and maybe even a little romance. Get yourself down here for the fun on Thursday September 19th, 7-9pm and maybe even score a signed copy in the bargain!
It’s a strange path that leads from a degree in Russian Studies at UCL to creating a popular webcomic (My Life as a Background Slytherin) and getting your debut GN published by Simon & Schuster. But then what path into comics isn’t a strange one, we guess. We’re happy it’s one that Emily has made, though, because we love her work and we’re excited to see Bloodlust & Bonnets - originally a Jonathan Cape Graphic Short Story Prize finalist - expanded into a fully realized graphic novel.
“The year is 1820, and bored young debutante Lucy knows there must be more to life than embroidery and engagements - no matter how eligible the bachelor might be. It turns out that there are a lot of vampires in late-Regency England, and Lucy has an eye for spotting them and the desire to rid the world of them.
It's not long before Lady Violet Travesty, leader of a mysterious vampire cult, spots Lucy's talents and offers her a place amongst her vampire acolytes. Unfortunately, Lady Violet is most horribly slain by the famous Lord Byron before Lucy can accept. Lucy instead joins Lord Byron and his enormous, psychic eagle Napoleon in their ongoing fight against evils such as bloodsucking ghouls and bad taste. Before long they're joined by the mysterious Sham, an androgynous bounty hunter, who catches Lucy’s eye. The trio lie, flirt, fight and manipulate each other as they make their way across Britain, disrupting society balls, slaying vampires, and making every effort not to betray their feelings to each other as their personal and romantic lives become increasingly entangled.”
So get your best early-1800’s glad rags on and come on down to meet Emily and get a signed copy of her brilliant new book on Thursday September 19th, 7-9 pm! Can’t make it but would like a copy? No problem, you can pre-order a signed copy for collection or mail order on our webstore right now.
