This month our regular reading group brings Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s Umbrella Academy TP Vol 01 to the table! Come on down to discuss the inspiration for the hit Netflix show that brings dysfunctional family dynamics to an apocalyptic superhero saga.
“In an inexplicable worldwide event, forty-seven extraordinary children were spontaneously born by women who'd previously shown no signs of pregnancy. Millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children; when asked why, his only explanation was, "To save the world."
These seven children form The Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers. Their first adventure at the age of ten pits them against an erratic and deadly Eiffel Tower, piloted by the fearsome zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel. Nearly a decade later, the team disbands, but when Hargreeves unexpectedly dies, these disgruntled siblings reunite just in time to save the world once again.”
My Chemical Romance frontman Way seemed like an unlikely comics writer at first glance, but with a professional background in comics editorial from his pre-musical superstar days, he turned out to be more than capable. Along with the talented Bá on visuals, he turned out one of the best revisionist superhero books of the 00’s, and followed up with an equally satisfying sequel in 2008. Probably no coincidence that we’re currently getting a new mini-series as the Netflix show rolls out, but we’re not complaining. And now’s your chance to go back to the beginning and see where it all began, and chat with other comics fans about it!
Reads is Gosh’s monthly graphic novel reading group, where books are selected by group members for discussion. Everyone is welcome: just bring yourself, an opinion, and good manners! And if you’re buying a copy of the book beforehand to read for the group, let staff at the till know and you’ll even get a 10% discount.
The group will meet to discuss Umbrella Academy TP Vol 01 on Wednesday March 13th, 7-9pm, so get yourself along!
