Small Press Day is upon us again, and with it a whirlwind of workshops and book launches kicking off on Saturday 7th July at 2pm until we all stagger out the door at 9pm into the post-Pride streets of Soho!
Once again David Ziggy Greene, Broken Frontier and Alternative Press have masterminded a day of small press events across Ireland and the UK, and it's looking bigger than ever. Full details of events around the country can be found at this link, but you know where you need to be if you're around Soho way: right here!
With the Pride Parade right outside our door and workshops running from 2-6pm, then a shared launch party from 7-9pm, there's really no excuse for not poking your nose into Soho on that Saturday. As with previous years, we'll be running a series of hour-long zine-making workshops throughout the afternoon, each themed around a different subject. Experienced self-publishers will give guidance and advice to those curious about making their own comics, or just looking for that little push to make their own comics better.
The afternoon will run as follows, and all are welcome to come along and join at any time!
Broken Frontier Workshop 2 - 3 pm
With Jey Levang, Josh Hicks, Olivia Sullivan, Peony Gent, Anja Uhren, Cat Sims, Shanti Rai, Jayde Perkin & Matthew Pettit
Sci-fi Fantasy Workshop 3 - 4 pm
With Lando, Emix Regulus, Christian Ortiz, Alexander Tucker, DCWB
Humour Workshop 4 - 5 pm
With Benedict Tomczyk, Claude TC & Babak Ganjei
New Talent Workshop 5 - 6 pm
With King Louie's Lab, Ellie Crewes, Marlena Synchyshyn & Ben Williams
(Please note that children are welcome, but unlike our dedicated children's workshops, these workshops are intended for adults and may cover material unsuitable for younger children.)
Then from 6-7pm, Avery Hill's Ricky Miller will set up for a showcase of Avery Hill's amazing range of publications, with some special guests!
But stick around folks, because that's not all! Saturday evening from 7 pm we'll be cracking out the beers and bubbly to celebrate the release of not one, but two new books!
Avery Hill will debut A Projection by Seekan Hui:
A young woman starts a job as a family photographer and live-in nanny for a couple who have a fixation on preserving their children’s memory and legacy in print. She stumbles on a recently broken shrine and starts to notice an apparition in the photographs she exposes… Avery Hill are delighted to present Bristol based writer and illustrator Seekan Hui’s short story, A Projection. A meditation on memories; making them, preserving them and keeping them secret.
And Andy Oliver from Broken Frontier will be here with (deep breath!) Robert D. Wells, Jenny Robins, Anja Uhren, Alice Urbino, Alex Potts, Peony Gent, Josh Hicks, Kate-mia White, Olivia Sullivan & EdieOP to celebrate the release of the second Broken Frontier Small Press Yearbook! The book gathers stories from contributors on the loose theme "Brief Encounters", including last year's Six Small Press Creators to Watch! If last year's yearbook is anything to go by, this is a must-purchase collection.
