The Gosh! Authority 02.10.19
We’re launching two new titles from Pan Macmillan this Thursday: Aesop’s Fables, by Elli Woollard and Marta Altés, and Starbird, by Sharon King-Chai. Both books look absolutely gorgeous, and the creators will be here 7-9pm to sign copies and celebrate the releases! Good Christmas idea, just sayin’… Get all the details here.
Then on Friday we’re launching two new books from Avery Hill: The Tower in the Sea, the latest in B. Mure’s Ismyre series, and Walking Distance, the much-anticipated new title from Lizzy Stewart. They’re two of the UK’s most exciting creators, so don’t miss this chance to help them to celebrate on Friday, 7-9pm! Details here.
And then (phew!) next Monday we have the one and only Jon Agee joining us for a party, just as an opportunity to meet the celebrated artist behind such books as Life on Mars and the award-winning The Wall in the Middle of The Book. Come down 7-9pm and get a copy signed because, y’know, Christmas… Get all the details here!
We had our monthly Drink and Draw last week, and as usual the joint was jumping! Special guests Tom Woodman, Rupert Smissen, Sabba Khan and Peter Morey set the challenges for our aspiring artists with the usual wonderfully entertaining results. Keep an eye out for next month’s details soon!
FIVE TO WATCH THIS WEEK
Writer / Artist: Michel Fiffe
Michel Fiffe’s wonderful homage to Jon Ostrander’s classic Suicide Squad run is back, and it’s as fresh and entertaining as ever! This is the superhero comic for people who don’t think they like superhero comics, melding Fiffe’s indie sensibilities with solid action-oriented storytelling. It’s something quite unique in the comics landscape, and we’re thrilled to see it find a new home at Image, where it will hopefully find a wider audience with increased exposure and availability. Want to catch up on this team of misfit super-powered mercenaries? The first five TPBs are all available right now at a special £3 discount until the end of October!
VAMPIRE STATE BUILDING #1
Writer: Ange, Patrick Renault
Artist: Charlie Adlard
Missing your Charlie Adlard fix now the Walking Dead is finished? Fancy some colour Adlard? Ablaze Media have got you covered on both scores with a monthly repackaging of this French horror series. A young soldier arranges to meet his friends at the top of the Empire State Building before he starts active duty, only for the building to come under siege by hungry vampires seeking to free their imprisoned god. Ahh, New York! Looks like a fun, bloody book to lead into Halloween with.
GRENDEL DEVILS ODYSSEY #1 (OF 8)
Writer / Artist: Matt Wagner,
Publisher: Dark Horse
The very welcome return of one of our faves. Never mind the long-awaited finish of Mage, we all know that Grendel is where it’s at when it comes to Matt Wagner’s signature creations. We return to Grendel Prime, the cyborg war machine that serves as a bodyguard for the Grendel Khans, as he journeys across the stars looking for a new home for mankind. Expect the usual mash-up of genres as master storyteller Wagner teams up with his son on colours to give us what is sure to be a cracking mini.
Writer: Jed MacKay
Artist: Juan Frigeri, Art Adams, More
Miles Morales gets sucked into the new Web of Life and Destiny in this new series that taps into the sensibility that made the Spider-Verse film such a success. The series features guest art from an impressive range of creators including Juan Frigeri, Arthur Adams, Stuart Immonen, and Stacey Lee and cover art from Into the Spider-Verse character designer Wendell Dalit. It’s definitely a conscious effort to lean heavily into showcasing the various Spidersonas that exist across the multiverse, but we’re not going to complain about that!
GHOST RIDER #1
Writer: Ed Brisson
Artist: Aaron Kuder
Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch are back, with Johnny working as Hell’s warden and Danny reprising his role as the Spirit of Vengeance. Together they must work to stop the hordes of Hell breaking through into the living world. Brisson is a good solid writer, but the real draw here is Kuder. Part of Marvel’s always slightly baffling “Young Guns” program, Kuder is one of the most distinctive artists working for the Big Two. Cut from the same cloth as the likes of Ian Bertram or Chris Burnham, there’s an energy and character to his work that really elevates it. We’re thrilled at the idea of him drawing flaming-headed motorcyclists and demonic hellbeasts. Pick this sucker up!
