Christian Ward
Artist: Sami Kivelä
Publisher: Dark Horse

Acclaimed artist (and Gosh fave) Christian Ward makes his writing debut, teaming up with Abbot artist Sami Kivelä for this tale of magic and gangsters. It’s prohibition era Chicago, but the banned substance is magic, not booze. Al Capone is dealing in Lick, a drug that bestows magical powers on those who ingest it, turning people into wizards and monsters. Only one man can stop him: Eliot Ness and his Untouchables, who must uncover the dark secret at the source of the illicit sorcery. Looks like a lot of fun, and don’t forget our signing on Wednesday!

Artist: Various
Publisher: Marvel

An incredible array of talent has been assembled for this issue celebrating Marvel’s 80th year, with a spine story written by Al Ewing which introduces the Eternity Mask, a new cosmic story device that we’ll no doubt see more of in the future. But it’s basically just an excuse to tie together contributions by everyone from Neil Gaiman (doing Miracleman with Mark Buckingham!) to Roy Thomas to Chris Claremont to Rob Liefeld. It’s a crazy 100 page compilation of shorts that’s packed with treats for longtime Marvel fans.

Writer / Artist:
Luke Healy
Publisher: Nobrow

We’re always excited to see new work from Healy, and this autobiographical tale of him walking the Pacific Crest Trail is the perfect companion to his debut work How to Survive in the North (though perhaps not so perilous a journey as those related in that volume). The trail runs runs 2660 miles up the west coast of the USA, from California’s border with Mexico to Washington’s border with Canada. It’s a tough slog, and was a life-changing one for Healy. The result is a fascinating mix of an outsider’s view of the USA, grand travelogue, and introspective memoir. A must-read for any fan of biographical comics.

Joshua Williamson
Artist: David Marquez
Publisher: DC

Spinning out of events in The Batman Who Laughs, Bats and Supes are once again in their own team-up title, this time on the hunt for whomever may have been infected by the fiendish dark multiverse Batman’s evil as he seeks new horsemen for his cause. Williamson is a writer we’re very fond of (do check out his Image series Birthright if you like a bit of dark fantasy), and Marquez does slick superhero fare very well, so this should scratch the itch of fans of either character.

Mariko Tamaki
Steve Pugh

The latest in DC’s young adult line of original graphic novels, this time giving an overhaul of everyone’s favourite bat-wielding psychopath. These things are completely outside of continuity, so Tamaki and Pugh (whose art is looking as lovely as ever) have a pretty free hand to play around with Harley’s origin, including what looks like a rather novel take on the Joker. Expect a politically charged coming-of-age tale where a 15-year old Harley is torn between doing what’s right and doing what feels righteous. Interesting stuff!
