The Gosh! Authority 10.07.19

Should be a great reading group this Wednesday, as the folks at Reads discuss My Brother’s Husband Vol 01, Gengoroh Tagame’s groundbreaking drama examining Japanese attitudes to sexuality. It’s a great book, and should be a great meet-up. Details here.

Then on Saturday it’s Small Press Day, the annual nationwide celebration of all things self-published (or micro-published). We’ve got workshops and events on all day, including a collaboration with our pals at Orbital Comics. You can get all the details here!

And don’t forget, we’re taking pre-orders for our League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol 04 HC Bookplate Edition! It comes with a limited edition A5 3-D plate signed by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill at no extra cost! Get in quick and preorder here now!

Writer / Artist:

The return of that most acclaimed of comics anthologies for the first new volume since 2016, and it’s of as high a standard as ever. Editor Sammy Harkham’s eye for quality ensures a reliable consistency that you don’t normally see in an anthology, and as a special treat we even get a Harkham strip to boot. The volume also features contributions from R. Crumb, Anna Haifich, Noel Frieberg, Adam Buttrick, Archer Prewitt, Andy Burkholder, Lale Westvind, Will Sweeney, Dash Shaw, James Turek, Rick Altergott, CF, Aisha Franz, Kim Deitch, Ron Rege Jr., and John Pham!

Peter Milligan
Mike Allred

Speaking of welcome returns, what will no doubt be the highlight of these 80th Anniversary one-shots bringing classic creative teams together hits the shelves this week. Beginning as a run on X-Force before relaunching as X-Statix, Milligan and Allred’s poppy look at the intersection of fame and superpowers was a high watermark of the 00’s. Criminal it’s not all available in an affordable format, really. Anyway, they’re back, and it’s your moral duty as a comics fan to buy as many of these as possible in the hope we might get a new series.

Jeff Lemire
Michael Walsh
Dark Horse

Man, Jeff Lemire certainly doesn’t lack in ambition for Black Hammer, does he? From the original (excellent) series, he’s managed to build his own universe of homaged characters, taking what he likes from the larger superhero worlds and re-purposing them for his own use. So it’s fitting that some of those characters should meet their inspirations in this dimension-hopping mini-series. A strange man arrives on the farm and in Metropolis simultaneously, warping the worlds together. Also: Starro!

Justin Jordan
Rebekah Isaacs

Intriguing new Image series #1 this week, with a really striking cover by Gosh fave Becky Cloonan. Jordan and Isaacs are launching a new fantasy tale in the grimdark style, as a war torn continent begins to fall under the shadow of a rising evil. In response a team is formed: a turncoat, a skin eater, a sorcerer and his bodyguard, a serial killer, and a man known as the Devil's Son. Six despicable criminals who may be the world’s only chance against the darkness. The Dirty Dozen with swords, magic, and only 6 people!

Cullen Bunn, Kyle Strahm
Baldemar Rivas

And intriguing new Image series #2 is this little number by Bunn, Strahm and Rivas. It’s body horror-a-go-go as a flesh-warping disease hits a small Mexico town. The investigators trace the outbreak to a nearby cave, which leads to a subterranean world of supernatural terror. Looks like a fun little horror series, but the real standout is Rivas’ art, which really pulls out all the grotesque stops. It’s quite reminiscent of early Tradd Moore, with a touch of Junji Ito for good measure. Here, check this out:
