The Gosh! Authority 12.06.19

Hello!

Big triple-header signing this Saturday: to celebrate the release of Joel Meadows’ new book The Masters of Comics, we’ll have Laurence Campbell, Sean Phillips and Posy Simmonds all here signing the book from 1-2pm. Full details here.

First up though, our monthly reading group Reads is meeting on Wednesday night to discuss the fourth volume of the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: I Kissed a Squirrel and I Liked It. Everyone is welcome! Just come along for a 7pm start. You can find the full details here.

We had a great turnout last Wednesday for the launch signing of Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans’ DIE Vol 01, and the pair also signed our limited edition bookplates like absolute troopers. We’re already more than halfway through our stocks on that plate, so if you want one you should get in quick! Available to order for pick-up or mail order on our webstore.

FIVE TO WATCH THIS WEEK

SILVER SURFER BLACK #1 (OF 5)
Writer:
Donny Cates
Artist:
Tradd Moore
Publisher:
Marvel

We’ve been looking forward to this one: a collaboration between Marvel It-boy Donny Cates and unique visionary Tradd Moore on a character that really lets Moore cut loose with some crazy visuals. After the events of Guardians of the Galaxy #1, the Surfer finds himself on the other side of a black hole in a black void, where he must fight for survival and redemption. Moore’s art is something to behold on this: be sure to pick it up!

SOBEK ONE-SHOT
Writer / Artist:
James Stokoe
Publisher:
ShortBox

Stokoe cuts loose on the Egyptian crocodile god, who must rouse from lazing about in the waters of the Nile to wreck vengeance on violent cultists who worship Set. Really, it’s an excuse for Stokoe to indulge in some more big monster battles over the course of this 36 page comic, packed to gills with the kind of detail that Stokoe fans (like me) love. This is the kind of thing that might not be available too long, so snap it up while you have the chance!

ANGOLA JANGA HC
Writer / Artist:
Marcelo D'salete
Publisher:
Fantagraphics

Eisner-nominated Brazilian artist D’salete returns, with Fantagraphics publishing his massive 2017 tome in a lovely hardcover edition. Exhaustively researched and developed for 11 years, this is the much-overlooked story of Angola Janga, a Brazilian community of escaped slaves that fought fiercely for their independence for over 100 years. From its formation in the late 16th Century until its brutal suppression in 1694, D’salete chronicles the conflicts from without and within, never losing sight of the stories of the fugitive slaves who found a home there. It’s a powerful work, and is absolutely beautiful to boot.

EVENT LEVIATHAN #1 (OF 6)
Writer:
Brian Michael Bendis
Artist:
Alex Maleev
Publisher:
DC

The Bendis/Maleev dream team are back together for the latest DC event series: Event Leviathan! (See what they did there?) Spinning out of Bendis’ Superman run, the mysterious villain Leviathan’s plans now entangle the entire DCU. With all competition extinguished, Leviathan sets out to remake the world to their own vision with a plan that Batman, Green Arrow and The Question are racing against time to uncover. It’s a story that looks to grow bigger in scope with every issue, and it certainly has creative pedigree!

SONATA #1
Writer:
David Hine, Brian Haberlin
Artist:
Brian Haberlin, Geirrod Van Dyke
Publisher:
Image

We’ve always got a lot of time for David Hine, one of the unsung greats of British comics. Here he teams up with Haberlin and Van Dyke to introduce what looks like an interesting new sci fi/fantasy world. The peaceful Rans are dominated by the warlike Tayans who seek to colonize and occupy, but Sonata is a young woman who refuses to accept the status quo, even if it means waking the Sleeping Giants: creatures that some think are gods, and others think are monsters.
