Hello!

TEMPEST BOOK PLATE BEN COLOUR_rgb.png

Did you catch our big new bookplate edition announcement late last week? To mark the release of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol 04: The Tempest HC (and the conclusion of that much-loved series), we’ll be producing a limited edition 3-D bookplate featuring all-new art by Kevin O’Neill, signed by Kevin and Alan Moore! Get all the details here, and don’t sit on it too long: the pre-orders are piling up!

Last week marked the 4th anniversary of the Gosh Comics / Broken Frontier Drink’n’Draw, and also marked the final Gosh engagement for Nora (who had actually already started her new job two days before). As ever it was a lively night, all the moreso for well-wishers come to see Nora off! Fret not, though, the Drink’n’Draw will be continuing in association with the good folks at Broken Frontier, so look out for news on the next event soon!

FIVE TO WATCH WATCH THIS WEEK

DEADLY PREY: HAND PAINTED MOVIE POSTERS FROM GHANA
Artist:
Various
Publisher:
Perfectly Acceptable Press

Long a favourite on various social media feeds, the wild, gory, often loosely interpreted film posters produced for Ghana’s travelling film clubs have long deserved a proper spotlight. Originally painted on sewn-together flour sacks, these bespoke pieces were never meant to stand the test of time, and few now exist. The art form itself fell out of favour with the advent of cheap commercial printing in Ghana, and so the small group of artists found other work in different fields. That is until Odd Obsession Movies, a Chicago based outfit, started commissioning new work from the original artists back in 2011, giving birth to Deadly Prey Gallery. This collection brings together those initial waves of commissions, covering everything from Death Wish to New Jack City, and is a must-have for any cinephile!

LOIS LANE #1 (OF 12)
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist:
Mike Perkins
Publisher:
DC

Rucka and Perkins put the spotlight on one of DC’s most under-appreciated characters in a book that should bring a similar slant to journalism in a super-powered world that Rucka & Brubaker’s Gotham Central brought to policework. Lois uses her investigative skills to uncover a threat to Superman’s life, a trail that will take her out of Metropolis and up to the highest levels of international politics. Rucka is a natural for this kind of stuff, and Perkins should bring a grounded, thriller feel to proceedings.

SEA OF STARS #1
Writer: Jason Aaron, Dennis Hallum
Artist:
Stephen Green
Publisher:
Image

A new space opera with fantastical elements from Aaron, Hallum and Green. Half blue-collar, space-truckin’ adventure, half Miyazaki-inspired ode to family and imagination, the book looks like a lot of fun. When long-haul space-trucker Gil is separated from his son in a freak accident (his ship is bitten in half by a space leviathan), he must try to survive long enough to find him, his suit all the while venting precious air. Meanwhile his son, Kadyn, manifests special powers that involve him being rescued by a Space Monkey riding a Space Dolphin. As you do. Heavy doses of pathos, action and irreverence await!

SPACE BANDITS.png

SPACE BANDITS #1 (OF 5)
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist:
Matteo Scalera
Publisher:
Image

Millar’s latest Netflix pit—err—-series is in collaboration with Black Science artist Scalera, and looks like good, solid entertainment. It follows two crime bosses who are each betrayed by their respective crews and team up to get their revenge. It’s part-Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, part Dirty Pair as these two women kick asses across the galaxy in their quest for payback.

SUPERMAN UP IN THE SKY #1 (OF 6)
Writers: Tom King
Artists:
Andy Kubert, Sandra Hope
Publisher:
DC

There was quite the kerfuffle among comics retailers back in 2018 when it was announced that DC would be releasing Walmart-exclusive 100 page giants featuring original work by top creators. Even worse for fans outside of the States who simply didn’t have Walmarts to actually buy copies from. Well at last those stories are being made available to all of us, starting with the Tom King-penned Superman stories (with Batman and Wonder Woman to follow very soon).
