The Gosh! Authority 19.06.19

Hello!

PEEventPostr.png

Something a bit different this week on the event calendar: The launch of the zine Perforated Eardrum, a perfect-bound collections of essays by Clara Heathcock illustrated by Patrick Wray chronicling a temporary life without music after bursting her eardrum (two days after getting a job as a music critic, no less). It’s a great read, so come down and get yourself a copy! Details here.

Shame if you missed the Masters of Comics signing on Saturday just gone: not only did you miss the opportunity to get a signed copy of Joel Meadows’ terrific new book, but you missed Laurence Campbell, Sean Phillips and Posy Simmonds (all of whom are featured in the book) as well! We still have copies of the book, and limited amounts of signed stock.

FIVE TO WATCH THIS WEEK

SUPERMAN YEAR ONE #1 (OF 3)
Writer:
Frank Miller
Artist:
John Romita Jr
Publisher:
DC

Welcome to DC’s biggest release of the year! Miller teams up with Romita Jr on art to tell the tale of Superman’s first year as he comes to terms with his powers and origins in small-town Kansas. As you might expect, this is not going to be your garden variety Superman tale, and as crazy as Miller’s writing sometimes gets these days, you know you’re going to get something interesting. It’s all out of continuity under the Black Label banner, and is apparently set in the Dark Knight universe, so who knows what to expect? But one thing’s for sure: we’re certainly looking forward to it!

USAGI YOJIMBO #1
Writer / Artist:
Stan Sakai
Publisher:
IDW

Really this is just a continuation of the work Sakai has been doing for decades, but we’ll take any excuse to give it a plug. Usagi Yojimbo is one of the most consistently brilliant books on the stands, the tale of a ronin rabbit travelling across Edo era Japan. From mythical creatures to court intrigues, it’s a sophisticated, exciting series with broad appeal (and should sell much better than it does). This new-reader friendly issue sees Sakai move to IDW as his new publisher and - for the first time - is presented in ongoing full colour by Sakai’s old Groo collaborator Tom Luth! Our highest recommendation, folks.

HELLBOY AND THE BPRD: THE BEAST OF VARGU ONE-SHOT
Writer:
Mike Mignola
Artist:
Duncan Fegredo
Publisher:
Dark Horse

Mignola and Fegredo reunite for this one-shot set in the heyday of Hellboy’s time with the BPRD. Never mind the disappointment of the recent film, this is the real deal, with two short Romanian-set tales told ijn the classic Hellboy manner. Expect fights, ghosts, folkloric creatures and sinister forebodings of doom. Oh, and there’s puppets in this one, too. Also expect the kind of lush artwork that Fegredo always brings to the table, barely seen since he finished up on MPH back in 2015. One for the lapsed Mignolaverse fans.

2000 AD SCI-FI SPECIAL 2019
Writer / Artist:
Various
Publisher:
Rebellion

It’s a tribute issue to the late, great Carlos Ezquerra, featuring some of his most popular characters in stories by Alan Grant, Robin Smith, Guy Adams, Dave Kendall, Michael Carroll and Patrick Goddard. Dredd, the Fiends of the Eastern Front and Wulf Sternhammer all get a moment to shine, and then there’s a very special inclusion: Equerra’s final, unfinished work. The mag contains the two completed chapters of a John Wagner-penned project they were working on entitled Spector, about a robot cop rooting out political corruption. All this under a tremedous Mick McMahon cover!

Rob Williams, Rachel Stott, Rachael Smith, V V Glass, Emma Beeby and more jump on board for a contemporary take on the old weeklies, with girl-led stories covering everything from ballet to codebreaking, with a bit of space adventure for good measure.
