The Gosh! Authority 08.05.19

Hello!

Quick bit of admin to lead: Bank Holiday weekend means that comics will be out on the shelves a bit late this Wednesday. The likelihood is around lunchtime, but keep an eye on our social media where we’ll make lots of noise once they’re on the shelves.

Great launch party this Thursday for Serena Katt’s debut graphic novel Sunday’s Child. It’s a fascinating memoir about family, guilt and the burden of history. Serena will be here from 7-9pm to toast the book’s release from Jonathan Cape. You can find all the details here.

We’ve got our reading group, Reads, on this Wednesday, and the group will be casting its eye over Alex Kot and Tradd Moore’s sci-fi tale of star-crossed lovers, The New World. All are welcome from 7-9pm, and you can get the details here.

Welp, that was Free Comic Book Day 2019! Bit exhausted and short of time for a full rundown this week, so I’ll get some photos and chatter together about it next time. Suffice it to say that it was a brilliant, crazy day packed with events and free stuff, and thanks to all the creators who gave their time to help make it so special. And of course to all of you comics fans who came along and made the day what it was! See you again next year! Well…hopefully wq’ll see you before that…

It’s going to have to be a quick one this week folks, so without any further ado, let’s bullet-point our way through the highlights of the coming week!

FIVE TO WATCH THIS WEEK

  • EXCELLENCE #1 - Brandon Thomas & Khary Randolph’s new series about an inter-generational conflict within a secret society of black magicians (as in proper fantastical spell-casting magicians) looks like a winner, and is definitely our pick of the week.

  • EVE STRANGER #1 - Phillip Bond makes a rare return to comics in this Black Crown book written by David Barnett. Eve is an amnesiac whose extraordinary abilities and luxurious lifestyle lead her to believe she’s perhaps engaged in a less-than wholesome career path.

  • BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS #1 - Bryan Hill & Dexter Soy bring back the classic Batman title, co-starring Black Lightning, Katana, the Signal and Orphan as the titular Outsiders.

  • GHOST HOG GN - Fresh off its Free Comic Book Day giveaway, Joey Weiser’s Ghost Hog graphic novel hits the shelves, with its all-ages tale of a recently deceased pig out for revenge!

  • RED SONJA & VAMPIRELLA MEET BETTY & VERONICA #1 - Amy Chu & Maria Sanapo bring us a tale that was almost certainly started as a crazy drunken bet at Comic Con.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

ASTRO CITY AFTERMATHS HC - Astro City comes to a close for now before its relaunch as a series of OGNs at some point in the future.

BLACKBIRD TP VOL 01 -Sam Humphries & Jen Bartel’s beautifully illustrated neo-noir fantasy series gets its first collection.

MIDAS TP - Collecting Ryan North & Braden Lamb’s comedy sci-fi story.

MOTEL UNIVERSE HC GN - Joakim Drescher spins a weirdo science fiction story about exploitation and rebellion.

PEARL TP VOL 01 - Collecting the first arc of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos’ action thriller series.

SPIDER-GWEN GHOST-SPIDER TP VOL 01 - Spider-Geddon hits Earth-65 in this new series by Seanan McGuire & Rosi Kampe.

STAR WARS AOR BOBA FETT #1 - Boba, baby! Star Wars’ most over-exploited bit-player is back!

THOR BY JASON AARON COMPLETE COLLECTION VOL 01 TP - So somewhere along the line, Jason Aaron became one of the definitive Thor writers, with a run that’s been seven years and counting. It’s a very good run at that, so now’s your chance to get on board from the start!

WAR OF REALMS NEW AGENTS OF ATLAS #1 - The speculators are all over this one due to a few first appearances, so if you would like it, best to let us know ASAP before they’re all gone! Oh…it’s the (kind of) return of the Agents of Atlas by creator Greg Pak & artist Gang Hyuk Lim!

WOODS YEARBOOK ED TP VOL 01 - A nice bumper edition of the fun series by James Tynion IV & Michael Dialynas, telling the tale of a high school transported to a hostile alien world.

That’s it, all!

Andrew.
