The British Museum’s Manga exhibition started last week, and it’s a truly groundbreaking show. You can get more information, book tickets and check out their great event programming for the exhibition at this link. We’ve also now got the exhibition catalogue in stock, and it’s an absolute must, packed to the gills with incredible work.

FIVE TO WATCH THIS WEEK

GRUNT HC ART AND UNPUBLISHED COMICS OF JAMES STOKOE
Writer / Artist:
James Stokoe
Publisher:
Dark Horse

We’ve been waiting for this one for a while: a massive collection of art and strips by the one and only Stokoe. As much as we’ve loved his take on properties such as Aliens and Godzilla, there’s nothing quite like the unique vision he brings to his own projects, such as Wonton Soup or the much-missed Orc Stain (which is apparently still going to make a reappearance one of these days). The book contains illustrations from his popular series, a wealth of cover art he’s done across the industry and a bunch of never-before seen strips. A must for any Stokoe fan!

BATMAN LAST KNIGHT ON EARTH #1 (OF 3)
Writer:
Scott Snyder
Artist:
Greg Capullo
Publisher:
DC

Snyder and Capullo reteam for their last word on Batman, a post-Apocalyptic elseworlds-styled tale (or is it?) published through DC’s Black Label imprint. Bruce Wayne awakes in Arkham Asylum, young again and sane, finding himself in a devastated future. With only the detached head of The Joker for company, he journeys across the blighted landscape to try and find the cause, meeting familiar faces on the way. This is sure to be a big deal: the capstone on the Snyder / Capullo run presented in three prestige format, bi-monthly issues.

SUPERMAN LEVIATHAN RISING SPECIAL #1
Writer:
Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Greg Rucka, Marc Andreyko
Artist:
Steve Lieber, Mike Perkins, Yanick Paquette
Publisher:
DC

An all-star team of creators kick off the next big DC event, as new villain Leviathan begins their plan to destroy the Man of Steel. We don’t know who they are yet, but they’re working their way around the DCU making pitches to heroes in an attempt to bring them to their side, not in an attempt to turn them evil, but rather to change their priorities. Which is all well and good, but we imagine the real buy-in here for people is that this is also the launch-point for the much-ballyhooed Jimmy Olsen & Lois Lane series, by Fraction and Rucka respectively.

LAURA DEAN KEEPS BREAKING UP WITH ME GN
Writer:
Mariko Tamaki
Artist:
Rosemary Valero-O’Connell
Publisher:
First Second

The much-anticipated new book from Tamaki featuring stunning art from Valero-O’Connell. It’s a YA tale of teen heartbreak and self-discovery, all told with a generous dash of humour. The path of teenage romance is never an easy one, and questions of what we want, what we feel we deserve, and what we are afraid we’ll miss are traps that are easily fallen into. Freddy is stuck in a toxic relationship with her dream girl, Laura Dean, but she can’t seem to get out of it. But perhaps the problems in their relationship aren’t as simple as they seem, and maybe Freddy has some problems of her own? Should be a cracker!

POPE HATS #6 SHAPESHIFTER
Writer / Artist:
Hartley Lin
Publisher:
AdHouse

Having now ditched his Ethan Rilley pen-name, Lin is back with an all-new Pope Hats. There’s something really nice about having a proper indie periodical dropping every now and then, and Lin is a brilliant cartoonist. Having now finished up Young Frances (one of our best books last year), he’s going down an autobiographical route with this issue, chronicling a move to the woods outside Montreal and the first few months of life as a new parent. So far, so routine autobiographical comic, but you can rely on Lin to pull the rug on your expectations and draw you into his world with a mastery of the mundane that is second to none.
