The Gosh! Authority 01/05/19

Hope you’re all prepared for Free Comic Book Day this Saturday, May 4th! We’ve got a bumper crop of events throughout the day, plus the usual stacks of free comics for your eager little hands! Let’s go through them all one last time, shall we?

FCBD19 Kids.png

We'll be kicking off as always with our popular Kids Drawing Workshop Table, where a plethora of artists will join kids aged 6-12 at our drawing table from 10am - 12.45pm. No need to book, no payment required: just pop along and join when space becomes available. Note that if you’re just coming for the kids table, you don’t need to queue with the Free Comics folk.

We've got an amazing range of artists from Rebellion (Ned Hartley), Bog Eyed Books and friends (Gary Northfield, Jamie Smart, Tor Freeman and Woodrow Phoenix) and cutting edge kids publisher Owl and Dog Books (Clauidio Ripol & Yeonju Yang)! All kids participating will also get a grab-bag of FCBD titles. You can find all the details here!

And while that's going on, we'll also have an incredible line-up of artists doing live painting in our windows! Korinna Veropoulou, Lizzy Stewart, Babak Ganjei, Lord Hurk, Claude TC and Ramsey Hassan will all be working away with paints and pens, so pop along to see some Real Live Artists at work!

Then we’ve got a wonderful group of Oni Press creators in the house for what’s sure to be a smash hit signing: John Allison (Bad Machinery), Marc Ellerby (Rick & Morty) and Sarah Graley (Kim Reaper) will all be here from 1-2pm! Full details here.

After that, clear the decks from 3-4pm for a superstar signing line-up of Mark Buckingham (Miracleman), Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk) and Jamie McKelvie (The Wicked + The Divine). Full details here.

And then we finish off the events of the day at 5-6pm with Simon Spurrier (Coda) and the three jolly gents of creative collective White Noise: Ryan O’Sullivan (Void Trip), Alex Paknadel (Friendo) and Ram V (These Savage Shores) ! Full details here.

We'll be opening early at 10am to accommodate the day, and do follow the guidance of our staff to make sure you queue in the right place.

Here are the rules:

  • Free comics will be available behind the counter downstairs.

  • Five per person, maximum one copy of each. No purchase required (but all purchases welcome).

  • First come, first served.

  • Be nice!

Oh, and by the way, in addition to the usual range of freebies, we’ll also have some special extra titles, including limited stocks of the Hellboy Day Seeds of Destruction #1 reprint, stocks of some small press titles, and the following extra-special giveaway…

Yes, we’ll be doing DC’s YEAR OF THE VILLAIN ONE-SHOT absolutely free of charge, both in limited quantities on its release on Wednesday, and also on Free Comic Book Day as well.

“The carnage starts here as the badguys take center stage in "The Year of the Villain," the most treacherous event in DC Comics history. Some act with united goals, others with plans selfish and secret, every one of them on a monstrous collision course against Batman, Superman and the heroes of the DC Universe. And our heroes will fail us.

Don't miss the start of "The Year of the Villain," featuring the talents of writers Brian Michael Bendis, Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV, artists Jim Cheung, Alex Maleev and Francis Manapul and cover artist Greg Capullo.”

Yep, free while stocks last, so don’t snooze on it!

We had our monthly Drink & Draw last week in conjunction with Broken Frontier, and it was absolutely rammed! Do be sure to get along to one of these if you never have. It’s a total blast.

Bit of admin: with the bank holiday next Monday, we’ll having the usual slight delay getting things on the shelves next Wednesday. Keep an eye on our social media, where we’ll make lots of noise as soon as everything is on the shelves.

Writer / Artist:
Emily Carroll
Koyama Press

A new Emily Carroll comic is always reason to celebrate, and this new oversized graphic novella from Koyama is easily our pick of the week. In this gothic tale, dripping in atmosphere and charged with eroticism, a young woman enters a castle from which no-one has returned, determined to destroy the evil within. As we’re drawn into the mazelike interior, our heroine finds more than she bargained for in a skin-crawling narrative awash with black and red. Off the bat an early contender as one our best of the year!

Writer / Artist:
Mat Brinkman
Hollow Press

Back in print for the first time in a decade, Mat Brinkman’s 2000-2005 strip is collected in a beautifully produced hardcover at its original size. Brinkman’s incredibly influential comics still feel as fresh and vital as ever, despite legions of imitators. Now including a reprinted comic review by Frank Santoro - “Mat Brinkman the Spiral Architect” - and a Multiforce art gallery as appetising extras. Limited to just 1500 copies and published by European horror comic masters Hollow Press, this is not easily available in the UK, and once our limited quantities are gone we’re unlikely to see more. We’ve also got limited stock of his other classic Teratoid Heights!

Writer / Artist:
Kelsey Wroten
Uncivilised Books

A kind of modern-day Art School Confidential starring art student Caroline Bertram, a queer, near-alcoholic, art-school graduate who sees herself as something of a tortured genius. Wroten is an illustrator with published work in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Village Voice, NPR, and many more. In her debut graphic novel, she shows off her comics storytelling chops in a biting, witty, affectionate skewering of the modern art scene.

Writer / Artist:

As their FCBD offering is the Treasury of British Comics Funny Pages collection, Rebellion have decided to bring out a pleasingly cheap 2000AD one-shot starring some of your favourite baddies from the Galaxy’s Greatest Magazine. We’ve got Judge Death by Rob Williams and Henrik Sahlstrom, Lord Weird Slough Feg by Pat Mills and Kyle Hotz, Brass and Bland by Karl Stock and Kael Ngu, The Stix by Matt Smith and Chris Weston; and a Terror Tale by Henry Flint! All that for just 99p, in a standard US comics format, no less!

Tom Taylor
Trevor Hairsine, James Harren, Stefano Guadiano
DC (geddit??)

IT’S NOT DC DOING MARVEL ZOMBIES! Or so they tell us. Actually, it looks more like DC does 28 Days Later, as an unleashed techno-virus rages across the planet with terrifying speed, turning the populace into flesh-hungry monsters. In this apocalyptic landscape, the DC heroes battle not to save the world, but merely to survive. Should be a good laugh: Taylor has a lot of fun over in the pages of Injustice, and similar to that this is an Elseworlds in all but name, so the gloves are off. Who lives? Who dies? I dunno, but there’s some beautiful James Harren artwork in here (pages 7-14 for those looking), so at least it’ll look pretty.
