Greg Pak
Giannis Milonogiannis

This looks like a lot of fun. Greg Pak is a reliably solid writer who is capable of real flourish, particularly in his creator-owned work such as Mech Cadet Yu. Teaming up with former Prophet artist Milonogiannis, Pak plays into his strengths with this new adventure series set in an alternative 19th Century where the great cities of China, Korea and Japan have been invaded by an unknown enemy. A small group of survivors from all three countries have settled on a hidden island and built themselves a new society, but now receive word of a new Shogunate which demands fealty. The alternative: they will left defenceless against a marauding army of beastly mutants. Worth picking up, for sure.

Robbie Thompson
Niko Henrichon

One of Marvel’s most entertaining writers teams up with the artist of Pride of Baghdad for a Skrull story that shows us another side of the shape-shifting villains. It’s kind of like The Americans meets The Vision as we spend time with the Warners, an all-American family that just happen to be Skrull sleeper agents, preparing the way for a full-scale invasion. Their first task is to find the source of Stark Industries post-Secret Invasion Skrull detection technology. And also pay the mortgage, make nice with their neighbours, do well at work and make sure the kids get good grades. Y’know- life stuff. Oh, and also evade that Skrull-detecting technology. Looks like a pretty sharp, off-beat mini.

Jai Nitz
Tom Reilly
Dark Horse

A spirit of cheesy 70’s sci-fi is alive and well in the pages of Astro Hustle, a tale that is equal parts Battle Beyond the Stars, Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, with a healthy dose of Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg for good measure. Chen Andalou is a bit of a scoundrel: a thief and a con-man. His antics get his thrown into cryo-sleep for sixty years, and when he wakes he discovers that his younger brother is now the President of the Galaxy. Will his family’s new-found status help him mend his ways? Will it hell. It’s a disco-tinged, all-inclusive thrill ride of cosmic criminality!

Writer / Artist:
Lucy Knisley
First Second

When last we left Lucy Knisley in the pages of Something New, she had tackled the topic of marriage in America through the prism of her own. Now she’s on another journey: pregnancy. And it hasn’t been an easy journey. Between difficulties conceiving, miscarriages and a difficult labour leading to a near-fatal delivery, Lucy has had plenty to learn and plenty to reflect on, all delivered here with her usual mix of humour and insight. An incredibly accessible, fascinating look at pregnancy, from her own personal experience to the broader historical context, with some surprising facts along the way. Highly recommended!

Magdalene Visaggio
Claudia Aguirre

Take a bit of Lumberjames, a pinch of Paper Girls and a sprinkle of Stranger Things and you’ve got yourself a tasty dish of Morning in America. Comparisons do it a disservice, however, as Visaggio and Aguirre’s tale of a small-town girl gang taking on marauding monsters is certainly able to stand on its own two feet. It’s a winning combination of a well-drawn cast of likeable characters who don’t fit easily into any lazy stereotypes and, well, monsters. How can you lose?
