Then on Wednesday it’s the February edition of Reads, our monthly reading group. This month we’re looking at Crush, the latest YA GN from Svetlana Chmakova. Everyone is welcome, whether it’s your first time or your 100th, so come along for 7-9pm! More details here.
FIVE TO WATCH THIS WEEK
MISTER MIRACLE TP
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Mitch Gerads
The long-awaited collection of Tom King & Mitch Gerad’s award-winning mini-series is here! Collecting all 12 issues in their entirety, this book represents one of the most ground-breaking superhero tales we’ve seen in many years. Experimental storytelling in 9-panel grids has never been so enthralling, and King’s idiosyncratic take on Scott Free, Big Barda and the entire Fourth World pantheon is every bit as bold and engaging as his Vision mini-series. Mitch Gerad certainly does his share of the heavy lifting too, with layered, rich art. It’s certainly one that people are going to be talking about for some time to come.
We certainly will be, as Mitch has been kind enough to create an exclusive Gosh Bookplate for us! One small hitch: we haven’t got the signed plates in hand yet, so if you pick up a copy, do please hold onto your receipt, and you can swap it for a copy of the bookplate when they arrive. Otherwise, if you’d like a copy set aside when they do arrive, or want one mailed out, you can pre-order on the webstore now.
WONDER TWINS #1 (OF 6)
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Stephen Byrne
The next title in the Bendis-brainstormed Wonder Comics line, written by fan-favourite Russell with art by Serenity and Green Arrow artist Byrne. The Wonder Twins are alien siblings first introduced in the Super Friends cartoon before making their way into the DC Universe proper. In their new series, Zan and Jayna are exiled to Earth, where they must adjust to the awkward realities of high school life while also pulling down intern duty at the Hall of Justice.
AVENGERS NO ROAD HOME #1 (OF 10)
Writer: Al Ewing, Jim Zub, Mark Waid
Artist: Paco Medina
With the same creative team as the surprisingly great No Surrender storyline, No Road Home promises to be a weekly roller-coaster ride (How wild a ride? Look for Conan to turn up in issue #6.) Billed as a “spiritual successort” to No Surrender, the book stars an Avengers team comprising of Hawkeye, Hercules, Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Spectrum, Vision and Rocket Raccoon, enlisted by Voyager to take on a God-slaying menace across time and space. We’re always up for good, self-contained superheroics, especially when Ewing or Waid are in the mix. Count us in.
SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #1
Writer: Gerry Duggan
Artist: Ron Garney
Speaking of Conan, the sword-slinging Cimmerian gets a second ongoing this week. Sadly not the oversized, black & white magazine that the title might have promised, but it does feature the art of Ron Garney, who seems like a perfectly sensible choice to take on a Conan book. Duggan promises some good, pulpy action with a storyline that kicks off with Conan on the high seas.
WALLY WOOD DARE DEVIL ACES HC & SC
Writer: Wallace Wood, J. David Spurlock, Tommy Burns
Artist: Wallace Wood, Steve Ditko
A 200-page collection of Wally Wood war comics, much of which has never been collected before! Featuring stories from Capt. Savage, U.S. Paratroopers, All American Men of War, War & Attack, D-Day, Warfront, Fight The Enemy and Blazing Combat, the collection spans work from throughout Wood’s career, including two Cannon stories produced in collaboration with Steve Ditko. If you feel like splashing out, then stump for the limited hardcover version, with a metallic slipcase and an exclusive 16-page folio.
