The Gosh! Authority 23.01.19
We’ve got our monthly Drink & Draw next Wednesday the 30th January, the first of 2019! Organised with our pals at Broken Frontier, with supplies kindly provided by Cass Art, our guests this month are Nic Mac, Ed Stockham, and J.Edward Scott. So come along and stretch those drawing muscles! All are welcome, just get to the shop around 6.30pm before moving along to the Kings Arms pub at 7pm until late! More details here.
We had the launch of Collecting Cats by Lorna Scobie last week, and the place was rammed! We do still have signed copies of the book if you're quick (and a beautiful book it is). Heck, you can even order it online for mail order or collection right now.
FIVE TO WATCH THIS WEEK
Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: Steve Epting
Publisher: TKO Studios
TKO Studios are new kids on the publishing block, with an unconventional distribution plan that involves launching an entire series at once in both trades and boxed single issues. They are also hiring some top talent to produce their books, a mix of genre fare that will feel right at home to Image fans. We’re guessing there’s some movie money tangled up in this somewhere, but we’re not complaining if they keep the quality up. Of their initial line-up (see other highlights below for more), the biggest splash has to be this one: a new war comic written by Garth Ennis with art by Captain America / Velvet artist Steve Epting. An all-female team of Russian snipers plays cat and mouse with the invading Nazi forces on the Eastern front of WWII. And if you want to get a taste of this or any of the other TKO releases, you can read the first issue online for free on their website.
COLLECTED TOPPI HC VOL 01 ENCHANTED WORLD
Writer / Artist: Sergio Toppi
Publisher: Lion Forge
The lack of Sergio Toppi material available in English has been a sad state of affairs. Archaia brought out a few handsome editions, but availability was limited and all but one are unavailable. But now Lion Forge are doing their bit to remedy that, embarking on a seven-volume series of collected works. This first volume is a compendium of eleven fantasy tales, originally collected in French as Black & Tans, Krull (no, not that one), and A Minor God. Don’t snooze on these, because god knows how long they’ll be available for!
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker
Artist: Jamal Campbell
The second book in Bendis’ Wonder Comics teen hero line, introducing an all-new character in Naomi, a teen detective of sorts. Looking into her own pre-adoption origins after an encounter with a battling Superman and Mongul, Naomi slowly unravels the secret history of the DC Universe. It’s apparently a mystery that will have a major impact on both the Wonder Comics titles as well as the larger line beyond, but more importantly this looks like a solid character-focused title with sharp dialogue (Walker acting as a good foil to Bendis’ dialogue tropes) and great art.
BLOSSOMS 666 #1
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Matt Herms
Have you missed the madness of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic (stalled while Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa beavers away on the TV show)? Well this just might scratch that itch. Horror comic one-man-industry Cullen Bunn spins a tale of the Blossom twins, filled to the brim with all that satanic occultism you’ve been looking for. The twist this time? One of the Blossoms, those super-popular cornerstones of wholesome high school life, is the Anti-Christ. But which one? And what fate will Riverdale suffer for their pursuit of power? Not a good one, we’d wager.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1
Writer: Donny Cates
Artist: Geoff Shaw
A relaunch of the Guardians with the creative team of Thanos Wins (which missed out on our best of the year list by a whisker) at the helm. They join the Guardians in the wake of the team-shattering events of Infinity Wars, with Thanos dead and worlds at war. The chaotic state of the universe needs a new Guardians of the Galaxy, though, but who? We dunno, but it should be fun finding out, with a massive line-up of cosmic guest stars potentially fitting the bill. Also: Cosmic Ghost Rider!
