Margaret Stohl

Popular YA author Stohl teams up with the ever-reliable Pacheco to uncover the secret origin of Carol Danvers, the suburban Boston girl who would go on to become one of the most senior Avengers. Events in the present day force Carol to return to her hometown and confront the dark secrets of a past that she has all-but forgotten. We can expect a raft of Captain Marvel books coming out in the lead-up to the new movie, but this one looks like a keeper.

EUTHANAUTS #1

A team of death-obsessed characters come together to explore the greatest unknown of all: what lies beyond the boundaries of life. When a doorway into "deathspace" opens after the death of a mentor, Thalia Rosewood and her companions kit up to pass through it, where they will discover the multicultural truths of death and beyond. Early reviews are marking this as the best title yet in Shelly Bond's Black Crown imprint!

BAD GIRLS GN
Writer:
Alex De Campi
Artist: Victor Santos
Publisher: Gallery 13

Santos' striking art serves de Campi well in this heist tale set in Cuba on New Year's Eve, 1958, as Fidel Castro takes control of the country from fleeing dictator Fulgencio Batista. A gangster's moll, a jazz singer and a mambo queen have twelve hours to get out of Cuba, taking six cash-filled suitcases with them. This looks like a lot of hard-boiled fun, and it looks like Santos has had a blast with the visual styles of the time.

RAT QUEENS SPECIAL NEON STATIC (ONE-SHOT)
Writer:
Kurtis J Wiebe
Artist: Will Kirkby
Publisher: Image

A special one-shot with a very different take on the Queens. In a dystopian cyberpunk future Palisade that's more than a little familiar to fans of the Shadowrun RPG (that cover is going to tickle the nostalgia bone of fans), the gang is reimagined as group of elite shadowru--err---special operatives who take on an identity-stealing fiend! More notably, the issue is drawn by the under-appreciated Will Kirkby, who is one of the UK comics scene's best-kept secrets!

DEADLIFE #1 (OF 3)
Writer:
Jean-Charles Gaudin
Artist: Joan Urgell Mamba
Publisher: Titan

An undead apocalypse is set off by the actions of a child playing adventurer in his grandparent's attic after he sips from a cursed chalice. The innocence of Curtis' point of view marks this out from much of the zombie glut, unfolding events gaining all the more impact from the perspective of our youthful protagonist.

CLANKILLERS #1
Writer:
Jean-Charles Gaudin
Artist: Antonio Fuso
Publisher: Aftershock

In a fantastical ancient Ireland filled with magic and monsters, Finola is the daughter to a mad king who cares only for power. But Finola is sick of it all: the clan system, her scheming older sisters, the royal court, and her father and the god he worships. So she and friend Cillian make a plan: kill 'em all. It's a gritty tale of an Ireland that might have been, with more than a little Game of Thrones in the mix.

SHIT IS REAL GN
Writer / Artist: Aisha Franz
Publisher: D&Q

The latest from German cartoonist Franz, a tale of a breakup and the aftermath on the metal health of its protagonist, Selma. Told in an often dream-like manner, Franz explores Selma's mental deterioration, from her inability to function in day to day life, to her most inner thoughts and self-conceptions. A really remarkable piece of work.

SONG OF AGLAIA HC
Writer / Artist:
Anne Simon
Publisher: Fantagraphics

A feminist take on the classical Greek myth, mirroring the structure of the tales of heroes such as Herakles and Odysseus and peppered with allusions to music and literature. We follow the rise and fall of the nymph Aglaia, whose hatred of men informs her life as a reluctant wife, a passionate lover, an absent mother, a heroic fighter, a revolutionary queen, and eventually a figure of disgrace. Simon's playful, bitingly funny style makes this satirical tale a joy to read.
