Katherine Mansfield is one of the greatest writers New Zealand ever produced, though her fame was found once she'd left the country. Travelling through Europe, she met with the Modernists and dabbled in the occultism of Aleister Crowley, all the while producing a body of short stories that Virginia Wolff was said to envy. Mansfield's life was cut short by tuberculosis in 1923 at the age of 34. Sarah Laing idolized Mansfield, and her literary shadow loomed large across her own professional life. Now one of New Zealand's most celebrated comics creators, Laing charts her life against that of her hero, mixing biography, memoir and a little fantasy to produce a truly memorable work.

Hope Larsen
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux

A new YA graphic novel by Hope Larson is always cause for celebration, and this funny, touching story about two early teens drifting apart is fertile ground for her particular brand of grounded, humane drama. Bina's best friend Austin is shipped off to soccer camp for the summer, and she's not entirely upset because he's been acting pretty strange lately. Through the long, boring summer days she hangs with Austin's older sister, who shares and encourages her love of music. When Austin returns he's acting even more peculiarly, and the two are forced to confront the cracks forming in their friendship as their interests diverge.
