COME INTO ME #1
Writer: Zac Thompson & Lonnie Nadler
Artist: Piotr Kowalski
Publisher: Black Mask
Come Into Me is the follow-up series from the critically acclaimed writers behind one of last year's best genre books, The Dregs. This is a new horror series about body image, social media, and memory, exploring and extrapolating on our current fascination with sharing every aspect of our lives online. When an entrepreneur with a god complex creates a technology that allows two minds to share one body, he doesn't anticipate the degenerative effects of long-term trials. Come Into Me is a contemporary comment on connected culture and our longing for approval in the digital age. This is a world where technology and flesh become indistinguishable, begging the question, "How much sharing is too much sharing?" Reading like the genre lovechild of Videodrome and Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind it features skin-crawling visuals that will linger with you courtesy of Piotr Kowalski, who is channelling Otomo and Quitely in his latest, and perhaps best work to date.

WHY ART? SC
Writer/Artist: Eleanor Davis
In Why Art?, acclaimed graphic novelist Eleanor Davis' follow up to her Fantagraphics debut How To Be Happy, she unpacks the culture-wide ideas on how we see and engage with art, and how self-indulgent, goofy, serious, altruistic, evil, or expressive it can be. But at its essence, this is an artist wanting to explore the notion of what it means to make lasting, positive change as a creative. Davis holds court over her audience and subject matter with aplomb, never afraid to be critical, but always remaining positive in an attempt to illuminate the highest possible potential an artwork might hope to achieve. A work of art unto itself, Davis leavens her exploration with a sense of humour and a thirst for challenging preconceptions of art instantly drawing the reader in as a willing accomplice in her quest. Akin to Beaton's playful but incredibly insightful interpretation of History this is Davis weaving that same magic with art culture.

INFIDEL #1 (OF 5)

A 21st century haunted house story. Infidel follows an American Muslim woman and her multiracial neighbours who move into a building haunted by entities that feed on xenophobia. This is bestselling editor Pornsak Pichetshote's comics-writing debut but his confident style and wonderful use of pacing make his work read like that of a seasoned pro. Pichetshote is joined by artist extraordinaire Aaron Campbell, whose moody, atmospheric work on The Shadow make him a wonderful fit here for this brooding and creeping tale of dread. WIth Afterlife with Archie, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and the recent addition of Jughead: The Hunger already winning praise from all corners of the comics community, Archie Comics’ Horror imprint is going from strength to strength. This week sees another fantastic book join the ranks in the form of the brilliantly-titled Vampironica. As you may have guessed from that title, the premise is that Riverdale's lead socialite Veronica Lodge encounters a creature of myth and legend, who with one fell bite transforms her into a bloodthirsty vampire who descends upon her unsuspecting hometown. Written by brother-and-sister team Greg and Megan Smallwood with Greg also on art duties, this will no doubt be another brilliantly bizarre spin on the Archie we all know and love.
