The Gosh! Authority 28.11.18
Just the one event coming up this week, but it’s a goodie: to celebrate the release of Windowpane by Joe Kessler from Breakdown Press, we’ll have Joe here in conversation with celebrated cartoonist (and Breakdown stablemate) Anna Haifisch! Things will kick off at 7.30pm (once we’ve had a chance to set up), so get yourself down here! More details here.
We had the one and only Gilbert Shelton here on Saturday for a signing, and as ever he was a lovely, generous fellow, chatting and sketching the time away. Gilbert is one of the true underground comix legends, and it’s always a pleasure to have him here. We have signed copies of a number of his books over on the webstore!
DC NUCLEAR WINTER SPECIAL #1
Writer / Artist: Various
In case you’ve missed us banging on about this before, DC have really changed up the game on these kind of seasonal one-shots. Where once they were a dumping ground for inventory shorts or a try-out for new talent, now they really put some investment into the roster of talent involved, and the massive improvement in quality shines through. And maybe it’s just my personal tastes showing through, but this one looks like a real corker: a collection of short stories set in the far flung futures of various post-apocalyptic versions of the DC universe. Disappointed by Fallout 76? Imagine it with Batman!
MARVEL ACTION SPIDER-MAN #1
Writer: Delilah S Dawson
Artist: Fico Ossio
Now here’s a curious one: IDW are launching a line of all-ages oriented books featuring Marvel characters, including Spider-Man, the Avengers and Black Panther. And they’re really going all out to make the most of it, with great, interesting creators and a new-reader friendly, continuity-light approach. Spidey is first out the door, and with the Into the Spider-Verse film on the way it’s a bit of a no-brainer that they’re getting Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen in on the act. It’s perfect for the budding Spider-Fan in your life featuring a back to basics Spidey with deadly villains, high school dramas and a properly fearsome J Jonah Jameson! BIFF! BAM! POW! Comics can be for kids!
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN BY NICK SPENCER TP VOL 01 BACK TO BASICS
Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Ryan Ottley
Speaking of a back to basics Spidey, that’s the subtitle of the first volume of Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley’s run on the Amazing Spider-Man. It’s an appropriate name too, as Spencer really resets things for an extremely accessible series that incorporates the sleek, dynamic action that Ottley brought to the pages of Invincible with the kind of humour-tinged writing that Spencer used to such great effect on the must-read Superior Foes of Spider-Man. If you have ever been a fan of Spider-Man, or the recent PS4 game has perked your interest in our old pal Peter Parker, then we can’t recommend this perfect jumping-on point enough.
Writer / Artist: Edward Laroche
A new military sci-fi series envisions a future of genetically engineered soldiers who are mobilised to engage with an unknown alien menace. A massive ship suddenly appears over a major US city, the herald of a rogue planet which is moving inexorably towards the Earth with designs of conquest. It’s pretty hi-octane action stuff, very much in the tradition of good Gundam material, with plenty of nutso action to propel it along.
HIGHEST HOUSE TP
Writer: Mike Carey
Artist: Peter Gross
From the creative team behind Unwritten comes a brand new title that would make a perfect gift for any fan of fantasy fiction. Set in a wonderfully realised world where a strict cast system has created a slave populace to the aristocratic inhabitants of city-states, our protagonist is a boy named Moth who is indentured in the greatest of them all - The Highest House. Resigned to a life of misery, Moth is contacted by a mysterious force that exists in the Highest House known only as Obsidian. He is imprisoned somewhere within, and promises Moth riches and fame provided the boy obey his every command. Needless to say, his agenda might not be what it seems. Really great stuff, up there with Carey & Gross’ best.
