The Gosh! Authority 08.11.17

Big announcement this past week: we'll have legendary Furry Freak Brothers creator Gilbert Shelton here to sign copies of Fifty Freakin' Years of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (along with any other classics you might have in your stash)! Gilbert will be in the house on Saturday 25th November, 1-2pm, so mark it in your calendars and don't miss the opportunity to meet this genuine comics legend.

This week, though, we've got a couple of our regular events to satisfy your event cravings.

First up, we've a special edition of our popular Drink'n'Draw sessions in association with our pals at Broken Frontier, with a very special guest in the form of esteemed French artist Baudoin, whose graphic biography of Dali is available from publishers SelfMadeHero. Big thanks to Institut Francais and SelfMadeHero for making this possible, and of course to our pals at Cass Art for providing the supplies!

And then on Wednesday (TONIGHT!) we've got the latest gathering of Gosh reading group Reads, who are casting their eye over a book that many are proclaiming one of the best of the year (genuinely): The Flintstones TP Vol 01! All welcome, so come along for a 7pm start.

We had a great signing with the lovely John Kenn Mortensen last Friday. He was kept busy signing for folks the entire time, and those in attendence were lucky enough to have a chance to pick up goodies such as his brand new Christmas Bestiary, as well as a ghoulish postcard box and our exclusive print!

We've still got a handful of signed copies of the Bestiary and Sticky Monsters left, as well as the print which can still be ordered from our online store.

WriterJean-Yves Ferri
ArtistDidier Conrad

The 37th album of indomitable Gaulish adventures, and the 3rd by the new creative team of Ferri & Conrad. Doubtless to be one of the internationally best selling comics of the year, this volume sees Asterix & Obelix travel to Italy to meet the Italics - original inhabitants of the peninsula - and help them resist the might of Rome! This is the first English language volume not translated by the now retired Anthea Bell, so we're curious to see how new translator Adriana Hunter gets on. One thing's for sure: there going to be some Silvio Berlusconi jokes in there.

R. Sikoryak
Publisher: D&Q

The master of satirical re-contextualisation takes on the (in his own eyes most certainly) master of the free world. Sikoryak takes direct quotes from Trump, placing them into homages to some of the most famous covers from comics history. Wonder Woman becomes Nasty Woman; Tubby Tompkins becomes Trump; Black Panther becomes the Black Voter; the Fantastic Four are the Hombres Fantasticos and Trump morphs into Magneto fighting the Ex-Men. Expect excoriation, satirical comics-style!

Publisher: Dark Horse

The first new comics work from Concrete creator Chadwick since 2013! Here he teams up with Dark Horse founder Richardson for a New York fairytale. When two strangers simultaneously cast their coins into a wishing fountain, their dreams and fates become entwined. Love, fame, money, respect - all pretty standard wish material, but the outcome of their entanglement is anything but.

Underworld meets Sicario in a new miniseries from Sean Lewis, who impressed us with his writing turns on Saints and The Few, and artist Caitlin Yarsky. Hunted by a legion of wolves that roam the border, women are disappearing. The survivors band together to wage war. Detective Frank Coffey is trying to understand this mythic-level bloodbath when he comes across Red, a little girl with a secret and a sword.

Nick Tapalansky

A new YA gem from First Second by up and coming talent Tapalansky and Espinosa. While investigating the strange goings-on in his new town of Lancaster, Greg meets a ghostly girl who might be the key to unlocking the town's secrets. Only trouble is, he's fallen in love! Nice bit of doomed gothic romance mixed with teen detective intrigue. Sounds like a winner to us!

Originally an Oscar-nominated animated short, this beautiful story is now adapted into a graphic novel by two of the animation studio members. As the dam keeper, holding back the deadly black fog that threatens to envelop his village, Pig is isolated from the people of the town he protects. His only friend is Fox, and the only other person who even knows he exists is his old school bully Hippo. But when a tidal wave of black fog overwhelms the defences and envelops the village, Pig, Fox and Hippo form an unlikely band and venture out beyond the wall to find the source of the disaster. This book is absolutely gorgeous, so do be sure to pick it up for a look!

A moving biography of a remarkable man whose journey from despair to enlightenment mirrored the great works of western literature that ultimately saved him. The history of Matt Rizzo is slowly revealed to his son Charlie - who himself now languishes in prison. From his start as a mob hitman, to the job-related shotgun blast (and not a hunting accident) that took his sight, to his ultimate redemption under the guidance of one of America's most notorious murderers, Nathan Leopold.

Just a heap of kids fantasy adventure fun, with lovely, lushly coloured art. Sword-wielding bunnies, magician bunnies, bunny knights rescuing bunny princesses, thieving bunnies, bunnies that make really bad henchmen, witch bunnies, and a non-bunny evil queen seeking world domination? It's all here, awash with a healthy dash of puns for good measure.

Hamid Sulaiman
Translator: Francesca Barrie
Publisher: Jonathan Cape

A fictional tale by Syrian cartoonist Sulaiman set in the early days of the Arab spring where a young woman sets up a field hospital to treat those fighting to liberate the country from the rule of Bashar al-Assad. Informed by his personal experience (he left six months into the civil war), he describes the tale as "a way of imagining where I would be if I had stayed. There is always this question: should I stay, should I leave, what are the dangers? If you believe in something this much, should you leave it? Each scene in the book is a reaction to that question.
