To commemorate Black History Month, Image Comics are releasing a hardcover collection of Ronald Wimberley’s Black History In Its Own Words, a collection of his 24 BHIIOW illustrations from The Nib, plus 14 all new pieces!
A look at Black History framed by those who made it, BLACK HISTORY IN ITS OWN WORDS presents quotes of dozens of black luminaries with portraits & illustrations by Ronald Wimberly. Featuring the memorable words and depictions of Angela Davis, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kanye West, Zadie Smith, Ice Cube, Dave Chappelle, James Baldwin, Spike Lee, and more.
The works are presented in a bold, stripped down style. In Wimberly’s words: “I was inspired by the aesthetic discipline of Emory Douglas and Bruno Paul to work in graphic reduction and a limited palette inspired by national colors of the black diaspora. I hope that these images of black luminaries and their words will inspire readers to further research and be emboldened to live life as they have.”
The book is being released in a beautiful hardcover edition, and we’re lucky enough to have it graced (sorry couldn’t resist) with a bookplate featuring the one and only Grace Jones! Limited to 200 copies, each signed and numbered bookplate is printed on high quality card.
