The Gosh! Authority 05/01/17

Hello,

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a fantastic sent off for 2016, and welcome to the first Gosh! Authority of 2017. The first big change you’ll notice is in the team bringing these words to you.  Steve is handing his share of the blog over to Andrew. Why? The reason for this is unfortunately terribly dull and simply down to a new rota meaning Steve wont be around for the key blogging writing periods. And alas you are still stuck with me (Shaun).

Before we start, just a reminder that this week’s comics will be arriving to go out on Thursday the 5th January. We’ll get them out as soon as we can, but keep an eye on social media where we’ll announce as soon as they hit. And then from next week, we’re all back to normal!

Oh and don’t forget that our 50% off back issue sale as well as our huge range of discounted graphic novels continues throughout the month.

Now this opening section will look familiar as we dive into some of the highlights coming this week.

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

US Avengers #1
Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Paco Medina

We’re huge fans of Al Ewing’s current crop of superhero books and we all happen to be rather intrigued by this book! Al had an underrated run on Mighty Avengers a couple of years ago that was just a joy of a book, and now with his take on the Ultimates he has shown he can nail massive, smart, universe-expanding tales. So here’s the broad strokes of where US Avengers kicks off: the United States have replaced S.H.I.E.L.D. with the new A.I.M., which has had a rebrand as American Intelligence Mechanics. Ewing did a great interview with Comic Book Resources [LINK] which is well worth a read. It’s also worth checking our the preview they ran [LINK] to get an eye full of Paco Medina’s art, which is just lovely. It’s got an energy and confidence that makes it feel a little like a spiritual sequel to our old fave Nextwave: Agents of HATE.

Lobster Johnson: Garden of Bones One Shot
Writer: Mike Mignola & John Arcudi
Artist: Stephen Green

We’re always up for more monstrous pulp adventures from our favourite Mignolaverse vigilante. This time round The Lobster tackles a zombie menace when a prominent criminal underworld figure returns from the dead, reanimated by some sinister force. Always a shame not to see Tonci Zonjic on Lobster Johnson, but Stephen Green brings some exciting new energy to the table.

(And while we’re talking about the Mignolaverse, also shipping this week are the concluding chapters of two minis: Rise of the Black Flame #5 and Witchfinder: City of the Dead #5.)

The Unstoppable Wasp #1
Writer: Jeremy Whitley
ArtistElsa Charretier

Raised in the harsh conditions of the Red Room, the training facility that birthed the Black Widow, Nadia is the forgotten child of Hank Pym, recently arrived in the United States over in the pages of All New Avengers. Now she’s striking out into her own series as the Unstoppable Wasp, the latest in Marvel’s burgeoning line-up of teen heroes, by the writer of teen girl fantasy series Princeless and the former artist of Starfire. It looks like a solid addition, and should hit the right notes for fans of empowered, female-centric titles such as Mockingbird, Ms Marvel and Patsy Walker aka Hellcat. CBR have a preview up. [LINK]

Green Arrow TP Vol 01
Writer: Benjamin Percy
Artist: Otto Schmidt & Juan Ferreyra

The first of the Rebirth trades are here! Writer Benjamin Percy brings a political consciousness back to Green Arrow, more than ably assisted by Juan Ferreyra and Otto Schmidt (who is proving to be something of an artistic revelation).

Superman TP Vol 01
Writer: Peter J Tomasi
Artist: Patrick Gleason & Doug Mahnke

Meanwhile, pre-Flashpoint Superman puts on the classic tights once again, while also dealing with the emerging Kryptonian powers of his and Lois’ son.

Upcoming Highlight

Even though it’s only just in previews and not due out until March, Helena Crash looks so damn good we can’t help but shout about it now! Gosh! favourite writer Fabian Rangel Jr – who you will most likely know from his superb Space Riders – teams up with Warwick Johnson-Cadwell who’s distinct, beautiful style is the perfect fit for this pulse pounding, caffeine-fuelled, sword swinging, machine-gun firing, sci-fi adventure comic! The basic set up sees us in a future where coffee is illegal and our heroine, Helena, is a courier, delivering black market goods to anyone who can afford her services. But she finds herself in the employ of a ruthless crime boss, which lands her smack bang in the middle of a gang war! Fabian described his new book as Samurai Jack meets Mad Max and Kill Bill, but all about coffee. If you’re interested and want to add it to your order just drop us a line or ask next time you’re in the store.

And we end this week with a look back at the year that was with our personal top five comics of the year!

Shaun’s top five comics of 2016 – Head Lopper, Prince of Cats, Vision, Omega Men and whilst only three issues in, Hadrian’s Wall makes the cut.

Andrew’s top five comics of 2016 – Rosalie Lightning, The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, Black Hammer, Kill or be Killed and Monstress. And no doubt something else I swore all year would be my favourite but I’m currently totally forgetting.

And that’s all for this week.

Andrew & Shaun.
