Attention: this is more of a general information post as this ticketed event has already been booked out through the Wellcome Collection website and our Twitter and Facebook in an astonishingly short amount of time, but here you go:
The Wellcome Collection, a wonderful London space that explores the connections between medicine, life and art in the past, present and future (and which I strongly suggest you should visit if you haven’t yet), is hosting a talk here at Gosh! on Comics and Medicine. I’ll hand over to what they have to say about it:
Stephen Lowther is let loose among the shelves of a Soho comic book store to talk about why Wellcome Library has been actively collecting graphic novels and comics since 2010. We’ll be looking at the medical profession, romance, gender identity, thalidomide, sexual diseases, cancer, diabetes, radiation effects and lots more. It will be accompanied by a slide show with examples, from Oscar Pistorius guest starring in the 2012 Olympics issue of the Beano to Alan Moore’s parable of menstruation and PMT in Swamp Thing #40 in 1985.
Our hosts are Gosh! Comics a specialist graphic novel store showcasing many stunning examples of the genre.
The event is, as mentioned above, ticketed and has sadly already been fully booked. For those of you who did grab a ticket, we’re looking forward to seeing you in the shop and even more to Stephen’s presentation on the 10th of October from 19.30 to 20.30!
