As it’s Christmas/New Year/Bedlam there are only two comics in this week and this is them:
Blackest Night #6 by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis which means we’re nearing the end of the series – only two more issues to go! Johns talks about life, the universe and everything over at Newsarama.
The other one is Origins Of Siege, the prologue to next month’s Avengers event Siege. Preview pages galore over at Comicbook Resources.
And that’s your lot! Next week is business as usual with (more than two) new comics hitting the shelves on Thursday despite the bank holiday.
Happy New Year!
– Hayley
No new comics next week apart from Blackest Night #6 and Origin of Siege, folks! The Gosh! Sale will start on the 28th of December so it’s still worth making the trip if you can – there’ll be loads of recent hardcovers going for half price and anything else we felt like throwing into the mix.
Considering New Comics Day is also Christmas Eve we were hoping those ol’ comics publishers would be gentle with us and make it a nice easy week. Unfortunately for us they were only thinking of you lot and have thus landed us with a huge truckload of stuff, so there’s no way you’re going to run out of things to read over Christmas and get stuck watching Showboat for the 47th time. You’ll also get to see the ghosts of Gosh! past and scoff the remaining chocolates on the counter so it’ll probably be a good day all round. Don’t forget we shut at 4pm so get in early if you’d like to see our cheery faces.
So here’s what we’ve got:
Eric Powell begins his first new creator-owned series since The Goon with Chimichanga #1 (of 3), a story about a bearded girl, a rubbish travelling circus (see Randy – the man with the strength of a slightly larger man or Esmerelda and her amazing two-eyed goat) and a pet monster. It’s a quirky tale with a Goon-like atmosphere, kid-safe but not just for kids, says Powell. Previews are non-existent for this one so you’ll just have to wait ‘til Thursday. Speaking of Powell, his original Goon graphic novel Chinatown & The Mystery Of Mr. Wicker is finally out in softcover this week.
The lovely Christian Ward and Nathan Edmondson’s Olympus is collected in trade-paperback so if you missed it the first time round you can give it a go over Christmas. Edmondson talks about it with CBR where you’ll also find a bunch of preview pages.
Rick Remender’s got a pile of stuff out including Last Days of American Crime #1, the first of a three part series about a terrifying not-too-distant future. “At its heart it’s a classic heist story with touches of science fiction and socio-political business around the perimeter of it. The story takes place in America eight or nine years in the future where a few spats of domestic terrorism have caused a spike in public paranoia,” says Remender.
“In this climate the U.S. Government, in secret, has been developing a broadcast that neurochemically inhibits anybody within the range of the broadcast from doing anything they know to be unlawful. Their response is to seize every radio tower in the country, broadcast this beam and no more crime, no more illegal activity, no more jay-walking, no more anything.” But there are two weeks to go until that happens and it’s the last chance for everyone to get their yah-yahs out. There are loads of interviews for you to read and a preview too.
Garth Ennis’ war stories continue with Battlefields: Happy Valley #1, a three-parter about an Australian member of the British bomber crew in 1942. Ennis talks about it here and the artist Paul Jason “PJ” Holden gets his turn too.
Captain America: Who Will Wield the Shield? is a one-shot by Ed Brubaker which will see the shield returned to Steve Rogers or left with Bucky Barnes. Or maybe they’ll share it, with Bucky having it on weekends and every other Friday. Have a preview.
Andrew is very excited about the More Than Complete Action Philosophers! TP which is pretty much what it says on the tin plus four all-new stories that you won’t find anywhere else. Fred Van Lente talks about how it all began in this interview. Supergirl Cosmic Adventures in the Eighth Grade TP comes highly recommended by Andrew too. It was a six-issue all-ages miniseries and you can see a preview of #1 here. Ridiculously good fun.
Mike Mignola and Richard Corben give you another one-shot Hellboy collaboration a year after their Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Hellboy: Bride of Hell sees a nineteen-year-old girl kidnapped in order to be offered to Asmodeus, King of Demons. But Hellboy’s here to make it all better. Preview!
And finally, this week sees the release of the 300th issue of the Comics Journal! There’s loads of stuff in this one which is probably just as well because it’ll take you a week to read it and you won’t notice the lack of comics on New Year’s Eve (I’ll get to that in a second). It’s a collection of interviews by creators with creators – the idea is that an established, influential type talks with a rising-star type and they print the results. So you’ll get Kevin Huizenga/Art Spiegelman, Zak Sally/Jaime Hernandez, Frank Quitely/Dave Gibbons, Alison Bechdel/Danica Novgorodoff, Denny O’Neil/Matt Fraction, Hitchcock/Truffaut (maybe not) and more. David Mazzucchelli talks with Dash Shaw (Bottomless Belly Button) and you can read a bit of it here.
Right, so next week: No comics are shipping except for Blackest Night #6 and Origin of Siege. But there’s still a reason to get off your post-Christmas arse and that reason is the Gosh! sale! From the 28th of December you’ll find loads of recent hardcovers going for half price or more, plus a whole heap of other books we felt like throwing into the mix. No tat here, it’ll be worth the trip, with fresh stock added regularly. Look for the sale sign!
Probably won’t be a mail-out next week, what with there being no comics to talk about and all, so I’ll see you in two weeks.
Merry Christmas, Bedford Falls!

That’s right folks, it’s another Gosh! Bookplate Edition! This time Fat Freddy’s Cat gets the special treatment with a signed and numbered bookplate featuring all new art by Gilbert Shelton himself. There’s only 200 of these around and they’re already marching out the door so grab one while you still can. Keed Spills!

Fat Freddy’s Cat originally began as a footnote to the now iconic Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers misadventures but very quickly became enormously popular in his own right. Bringing feline logic to the tie-dyed, drug-flushin’ world of the Freak Brothers, the Cat can be seen sleeping on Fat Freddy’s head, battling endless armies of roaches, travelling to Mexico, saving the world from an alien invasion and (of course) the Hee Hee Hee drug.
“Gilbert Shelton is as near as comics have come to producing a natural comedic genius of the same stature as a Chaplin or a Tati. With the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers he has created a hilarious and unlikely sibling trio as timeless in their appeal as the Marx Brothers. He is truly one of the greatest and most sublimely funny talents that the comic medium has to offer.”
– Alan Moore

Blimey! It’s snowing! It’s also a week ‘til Christmas and this one’s arrived just in time if you’ve blanked on what to get people and have decided to give them stuff you want so you can borrow it off them in January: The Rocketeer Complete Collection is the entire long out-of-print saga of Cliff Secord and his mysterious jet pack in one fancy definitive hardcover. It’s all re-coloured by Laura Martin who was chosen by Dave Stevens before he died (she talks about it over at Comicbook Resources) so the 1930s look extra shiny.
More classic stuff of a considerably grimmer variety is collected in the Tomb of Dracula Omnibus Volume 2. There’s over 800 pages of fang and Transylvanian demonic nonsense from the likes of Marv Wolfman, Steve Englehart, David Kraft, Gene Colan, Tom Palmer and Virgilio Redondo for you to peruse while scoffing your mince pies and waiting for a Morecambe & Wise special.
It’s an odd one to follow but I’ll stick it here anyway: Marc Ellerby popped in earlier this week to load our shelves with his self-published comics. We’ve now got more of the first issue of Chloe Noonan plus the brand-spanking #2 which is a few pennies more expensive than the last but considerably bigger and beefier. You’ll also find all three volumes of his autobiographical Ellerbisms which are about all sorts of things. All in all, they’re the best looking small press things around and more than worth their measly cover price. He’s redoing his website at the mo so it’s temporarily stripped down to the bare essentials but you’ll still find links to previews and stuff.
Mark Waid’s Incorruptible #1 is hot on the tails of his smash hit series Irredeemable, a study of caped morality at the end of the world. This series sees the irredeemable Max Damage attempt to turn over a new leaf after witnessing the Plutonian’s worldwide destruction and starts by changing his name to Max Danger. There’s a preview of it here.
The Next Issue Project is the series that sees top modern comics creators draw and write what they imagine would be the next issue of classic cancelled titles from the 1930s-1950s. You saw the first one in February of last year which featured Joe Casey, Erik Larsen, Mike Allred, Kyle Baker, Frank Cho, Bill Sienkiewicz, Howard Chaykin, Steve Niles, Phil Hester, Jay Faerber, Steve Gerber, and Jim Valentino. Pages from that one are still banging about on the web if you missed ‘em and there’s a review too. In the latest issue you’ll find Erik Larson (him again), Paul Grist, Steve Horton, and Michael T. Gilbert paying homage to the Golden Age greats. Comixology have five lovely looking preview pages for you.
It’s a smallish week so that’s about it comic-wise, but there is one last bit of news. Thunderbolts #139 is the first of a two-part story written by Jeff Parker starring Agents of Atlas. Parker’s taken over the Thunderbolts writing job so you can expect more from him.
Lastly, Alex Fitch has a few interesting bits in his bag of Panel Borders podcasts. First up you can find Reinhard Kleist talking about his graphic novel Johnny Cash: I See a Darkness (of which we still have a few bookplate editions if you’ve still got presents to buy for Cash fans), then you can hear Logicomix author Apostolos Doxiadis talking smart about all sorts of things, and finally you can catch the last in Fitch’s series on British Mavericks – graphic designer Rian Hughes. He’s on there talking about the early days of small press and beyond. Have a poke around on the Panel Borders site. I’m sure you’ll find lots of stuff I’ve missed.
Christmas Opening Times! Business as usual except for a few funny ones: Christmas Eve (which is also New Comics Day) we’re open 10-4pm. Closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. New Year’s Eve we’re open 10-4pm and closed on New Year’s Day.
That’s all folks.
